Production: Development: In April 2021, news surfaced about Rama Rao and Siva's collaboration for "NTR30," marking their second venture together after the success of "Janatha Garage" (2016). The official announcement came on Ugadi (13 April 2021), with Yuvasudha Arts co-producing the film with N. T. R. Arts. However, Siva's commitments to "Acharya" and Rama Rao's to "RRR" delayed the production's kickstart. Described as a "large-scale project with broad commercial appeal" by Siva, the script underwent fine-tuning following the box-office performance of "Acharya," causing a delay in filming until late 2022. In November, pre-production activities commenced, with production slated to begin in early 2023.
Originally slated to commence on 24th February 2023, the start was postponed due to unfortunate events and Rama Rao's engagement in the Academy Awards campaign for "RRR." The film was officially launched on 23rd March 2023 in Hyderabad, amidst a puja ceremony attended by the cast, crew, and S. S. Rajamouli, with the muhurat shot initiated. The title "Devara" was officially announced on 19th May 2023. Subsequently, on 4th October, it was announced that the film would be split into two parts.
Casting: Janhvi Kapoor makes her Telugu cinema debut with this film. The technical team comprises Anirudh Ravichander (music), R. Rathnavelu (cinematography), A. Sreekar Prasad (editing), Sabu Cyril (production design), Kenny Bates (stunt choreography), and Brad Minnich and Yugandhar T (visual effects supervisors).
Although Alia Bhatt, Shraddha Kapoor, Mrunal Thakur, and Rashmika Mandanna were considered for the female lead, Janhvi Kapoor eventually landed the role, marking her debut in South Indian cinema. Saif Ali Khan joined the cast as the antagonist following reports in February 2023. Prakash Raj and Srikanth were present at the launch ceremony, confirming their involvement. Further additions to the supporting cast were made in May 2023, including Mani Chandana and Tarak Ponnappa. Shine Tom Chacko was announced as part of the cast in June 2023, with Kalaiyarasan, Narain, Murali Sharma, and Abhimanyu Singh joining after filming preliminary sequences.
Filming: Principal photography commenced on 1st April 2023 in Hyderabad, with Rama Rao's presence. Janhvi and Khan joined the sets in mid-April. Following a brief hiatus in mid-May for Rama Rao's family vacation, filming resumed on 7th June 2023, completing crucial sequences involving Rama Rao, Khan, and other cast members in 14 days. Action sequences, including ones shot in extreme low light, were filmed during this schedule. A month-long break ensued before filming resumed on 31st July 2023, for an underwater action sequence. Rama Rao underwent swimming training with experts from Mumbai for this segment. In September, sequences were shot at a specially constructed beach set in Shamshabad. The underwater action sequence concluded the schedule on 4th October 2023 in Hyderabad, after which filming continued in Goa, coinciding with Dusshera (24th October 2023). Janhvi completed her portions on 1st November, with the Goa schedule wrapping up by 20th November. The team returned to Hyderabad for a brief schedule in mid-December. By late-December 2023, approximately 80% of the filming was completed, with the remainder slated to wrap up by January 2024.
